06/03/2010 - Dublin, OH (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Justin Rose carded a seven-under 65 early Thursday to grab a share of the lead after the opening round of The Memorial.
Later in the day, Rose was joined atop the leaderboard at Muirfield Village Golf Club by former U.S. Open champion Geoff Ogilvy and Rickie Fowler.
Phil Mickelson, who could overtake Tiger Woods as the top-ranked player in the game with a win this week, posted a five-under 67. He shares fourth place with Michael Letzig, Andres Romero, Rory Sabbatini and Jason Day.
Woods managed two birdies and two bogeys in an even-par round of 72. He parred his final eight holes to finish round one tied for 49th.
Woods, who won his fourth Memorial title last year, opened with a bogey on the first. At the par-four sixth, an unlucky break led to a bogey.
Hitting from the left rough, Woods' approach shot landed on a sprinkler head and bounced well over the green. His third remained in the rough over the green, then he chipped to 10 feet. Woods converted that for bogey.
After a pair of pars, Woods rolled in a 20-footer for birdie on the ninth. He made it two in a row as he converted a 12-foot birdie putt on No. 10. Over the final eight holes, Woods' shortest birdie chance was from 18 feet out. He was unable to convert and parred those eight to end at even-par.
"I played the par-fives terrible today. I played them even-par. Can't play these par-fives even-par," Woods said. "I had a couple good looks today, and just kind of skirted the edge."
Rose played the back nine first and stumbled to a bogey on the 10th. He moved back to even-par with a birdie at 14, then birdied 16 and 18 to turn in minus- two.
The Englishman dropped in back-to-back birdies tries from the second to get to minus-four. Rose ran off three consecutive birdie chances from the fifth to be the first in the clubhouse at seven-under.
"Funny thing is I played at Colonial last week, made the cut and finished close to last, but came away from the week feeling really good about things," said Rose, who has three top-14 finishes at this event since 2004. "That I guess, is a rare state of mind for me. I often tend to be into results too much. Last week for the first time in a while, I felt like I'm not just trying to get results week to week. I feel like I'm trying to get better and better as I go forward."
Ogilvy also started on the 10th. He drained three birdie efforts in a four- hole span from the 12th and made the turn at minus-four after a birdie on 18.
The Australian also birdied one and two to make it three in a row. After birdies on five and seven, Ogilvy was in the lead at minus-eight. However, he faltered to a bogey on the par-three eighth and into a share of the lead.
"It was nice to hole the putts. I think, if anything's been missing in my game the last little month or two, it's been poor putting," admitted Ogilvy. "So it's nice to hole a few."
Fowler tripped to a bogey on the second, but rebounded with a stellar run of golf. He drained three straight birdie tries from the fourth and ended that run with an eagle on the par-five seventh.
The 21-year-old then birdied the eighth to move to minus-five. He cruised around the turn with five pars in a row. Fowler got within one of the lead with a birdie on the 14th. At the 18th, he ran home a 23-footer for birdie to finish alongside Rose and Ogilvy.
Mickelson also played the back nine first and did all of his scoring in two bunches. He connected on birdie chances at 14 and 15 before parring seven in a row. Mickelson drained three straight birdie tries from the fifth to move to minus-five.
"It was a good start. I enjoyed the round. There were a lot of birdies out there," Mickelson said, who has never won The Memorial.
NOTES: Mickelson can overtake Woods atop the world rankings with a win this week and Woods finishing outside the top-four...Mark Calcavecchia, who is making his final PGA Tour start before heading to the Champions Tour, opened with an even-par 72 and is tied with Woods and 16 others in 49th...Among those other 16 is Matt Hill, the 2009 NCAA Champion who turned professional at the start of the week...The first round was completed despite two weather delays that lasted two hours, 28 minutes combined.

In the wake of the news that the 49ers have signed receiver Michael Crabtree after an extended holdout, there has been not a hint of the dollars to be paid to Crabtree.
And since this means that his agent hasn't leaked the numbers, it means that his agent feels no specific motivation to do so.
Possibly because his agent isn't all that thrilled to have his name on the deal.
So the numbers will come from sources other than Crabtree's agent. And we've gotten our mitts into them.
Per a league source, Crabtree has signed a six-year, $32 million contract. (The total includes guaranteed money, base salaries, and the one-time incentive based on achieving minimum playing time.)
The deal also includes $17 million in guaranteed money.
As reported elsewhere, the deal can void to five years based on performance triggers, wiping out a final year base salary of $4 million. But they won't be easily reached.
The source tells us that, in his first four seasons (including 2009), Crabtree must either qualify for two Pro Bowls, or he must qualify for one Pro Bowl in one year and he must participate in 80 percent of the offensive snaps in a separate year in which the team makes the playoffs.
In other words, if in 2010 he qualifies for the Pro Bowl and the team makes the playoffs and he participates in 80 percent of the snaps, he'll still need to make it to the Pro Bowl or achieve the 80-percent/playoffs in another season.
Since the chances of Crabtree making the Pro Bowl or participating in 80 percent of the offensive snaps this year is roughly zero percent, he'll have three years to get it done.
And it won't be easy. Frankly, he'll be hard pressed to make it to one Pro Bowl in three years with the likes of Larry Fitzgerald, Calvin Johnson, Anquan Boldin, Steve Smith, the other Steve Smith, Hakeem Nicks, DeSean Jackson, Johnny Knox, Percy Harvin, Greg Jennings, Roddy White, T.J. Houshmandzadeh in the same conference for sportsbook betting.
So, by all appearances, it's a six-year deal. And at $17 million in guaranteed money, the per-year guarantee is a tepid $2.83 million per year.
There's another problem with the deal -- it has no mid-tier incentive package. Instead, the additional $8 million that Crabtree can earn (pushing the max value to six years, $40 million) requires the kind of unrealistic, mega-star performances that no rookie is likely to ever achieve.
So while the contract paid to Packers defensive tackle B.J. Raji covers five years and pays $22.5 million, he has the ability (if he's a solid player) to make up the difference between his base deal and Crabtree's five-year, $28 million haul via the mid-tier incentive package in Raji's deal.
And unless Crabtree meets the performance thresholds necessary to void the sixth year, he'll be stuck under contract for another year at a base salary of only $4 million.
There's one other area of concern with the deal. Crabtree, per the source, received no option bonus. Instead, he has significant money tied to a fairly new device known as a "discretionary salary advance," which unlike an opition bonus is subject to forfeiture if Crabtree decides in a year or two that he wants to hold out for a better deal. (We're also told that the 49ers have included language that would make certain escalators subject to forfeiture, too.)
Meanwhile, the deal falls well short of the mark for which Crabtree and agent Eugene Parker were aiming -- the five-year, $38.25 million contract paid by the Raiders to receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey, the seventh overall pick in the draft.
Even if Crabtree successfully voids the final year, he'll make more than $2 million per year less on average than Heyward-Bey.
Thus, as we explained earlier in the day, this is a deal that Crabtree could have done in July, which would have given him a much better chance of making a contribution to the 49ers during his rookie year.
So while the final outcome can be described as win-win, the broader view suggests that it's really a lose-lose situation.
