06/03/2010 - College Park, MD (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Patrick Sheehan fired an eight-under 63 on Thursday to take the lead during the suspended first round of the Melwood Price George's County Open.
There was a two-hour weather delay Thursday afternoon that forced play to be suspended for darkness at The University of Maryland Golf Course. Golfers will return Friday morning to complete the round.
Fabian Gomez posted a seven-under 64 and is alone in second place.
Nick Flanagan, Justin Peters, Jhonattan Vegas and Frank Lickliter II are knotted in third place at six-under 65.
Sheehan began on the 10th tee Thursday and birdied the 11th, 13th and 14th holes to reach three-under par after just five holes. He parred the next two, then birdied the par-three 17th.
At the par-five 18th, Sheehan drove into the first cut on the left side. He tried to muscle up a second shot, but came up about 15 yards short of the putting surface. Sheehan chipped in for the unlikely eagle and was six-under at the turn.
"I was just trying to hack it out, the lie was thick and heavy," admitted Sheehan. "I'm thinking just don't leave it short, just get it up there somehow and get a putt at it. It came out really good and it was just lucky. There was no skill involved, it was just luck."
Armed with some momentum, Sheehan promptly three-putted the second hole from 15 feet for a bogey. He atoned for the error with a 35-foot birdie putt at the very next hole.
Sheehan birdied the par-five seventh and par-four eighth to get to eight-under par. His drive didn't find the fairway at No. 9, but he was able to save par and the lead.
"I played very well today, which was nice to see," said Sheehan, who has two Nationwide Tour victories, including last year's Athens Regional Foundation Classic. "I've been struggling with the putter. It's all I've been doing. I haven't been going to the range at all lately, I've just been putting."
Sheehan has made only four cuts in 10 starts this year on the Nationwide Tour. His best finish was a tie for 29th in Panama three months ago and he's pocketed only $8,840 for the year.
Kyle Thompson, Hunter Haas, Darron Stiles, Jess Daley, Adam Bland and Ron Whittaker are tied for seventh place at five-under 66.
NOTES: Two weeks ago at the Nationwide Tour's last event, the Rex Hospital Open, thunderstorms canceled the final round and John Riegger was declared the winner. He is not in the field this week...Mathias Gronberg won last year and can become the first player in tour history to successfully defend a title. He shot a two-over 73 on Thursday...Five players will return at 8:15 a.m. (et) to complete the first round.

LaDainian Tomlinson Favorite to be 2007 NFL MVP
With the first NFL preseason game less than two weeks away, it is time to start thinking about football once again at MySportsbook.com. Reigning NFL MVP LaDainian Tomlinson is currently the 5-1 co-favorite to win the award again alongside Super Bowl MVP Peyton Manning.
This shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone after his all out assault on the record books last season. For those suffering from amnesia or were under a rock last football season, all L.T. did last season was set the NFL record for rushing touchdowns (28), total touchdowns (31) and total points scored (186) to go along with his 1815 rushing yards and 508 receiving yards. At 6-1, Tom Brady is next in line which isn’t surprising considering all of the firepower the Pats added over the off-season. With the addition of Randy Moss, Donte Stallworth and Wes Welker; it would be quite difficult for Brady’s numbers not to improve from last years 3529 yards and 24 touchdowns. There appears to be some decent value in Drew Bees at 10-1 considering he probably would have won the award last year if it wasn’t for L.T.’s record breaking season.
There is no reason to think the Saints will come back to earth this season and playing in a weak NFC, they should have as good a shot as any to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. At 15-1, Donovan McNabb could also be worth a look. Remember, many felt he was the MVP of the first half of the season before going down with a season ending injury. Reportedly, he is in great shape and well ahead of schedule to return to form. Also, he could have some added motivation to put up big numbers this season with the Eagles using their first pick in the draft on McNabb’s future successor Kevin Kolb.
